As migration from Albania continues, many young people face a difficult choice: build a future in a developing country or seek greater opportunities abroad. Public debate often focuses on why they leave, while giving less attention to what would make Albania a place where they could thrive. Led by RYLMP fellow Inva Hasanaliaj, the “Voices Before Departure” initiative set out to bring that question to the forefront. “Voices Before Departure” is a short documentary centered on young Albanians who are planning to move abroad. Produced through the RYLMP Advocacy Action Grant it allows them to describe—in their own voices and…

Disa emra duket sikur mbajnë brenda fatin e tyre. Dallëndyshet njihen për shtegtimet. Ikin kur stinët ndryshojnë. Por gjithmonë jetojmë me idenë se do të kthehen. Jo gjithmonë…

Albania’s tourism sector is one of the fastest-growing in Europe. In 2024, the country welcomed a record 11.7 million international visitors. Tourism now accounts for 26.4% of GDP and it got there by growing at 52.8% in five years, while the broader Albanian economy grew by just 3.6%. One in four lek in this economy comes from a visitor ordering food, sleeping in a hotel, and sitting at a restaurant table. That same visitor leaves behind food waste that nobody is measuring. This is the central contradiction Albania has not dealt with yet: that the sector driving the most economic…
